Context and what's at stake

Matchday 11 of the Belgian Pro League kicks off on Friday night at the Stade Maurice Dufrasne, with two lower-half sides meeting at 20:45 CET. Standard Liège sit ninth on 12 points (three wins, three draws, four defeats), while Beveren are 13th on 10 points (three wins, one draw, six defeats).

The stakes are real. Places seven to twelve lead to the European play-offs, places 13 to 16 to the relegation play-offs. A home win would open a five-point gap over a direct rival for Standard, while Beveren, promoted as Challenger Pro League champions in March, would climb out of the bottom group with three points.

Form guide

Standard are in a rut. They started the season unbeaten in five, including three straight wins over La Louvière, OH Leuven and Antwerp, but have now gone five league games without a victory: defeats at Westerlo (4-2), at Gent (2-1), at home to Charleroi (0-1) and at Genk (2-1), followed by a 1-1 home draw with bottom side Kortrijk last Saturday. Their only win in that period came in the Belgian Cup, 2-0 against Dender on 16 October.

Beveren are not faring much better. Tim Bakens' side lost 1-0 at Kortrijk, were beaten 3-1 at home by Lommel, drew a wild game 4-4 at Westerlo and then lost 2-1 at home to Union Saint-Gilloise on Saturday. That is one point from twelve in the league, with only a 3-0 cup win over Habay-la-Neuve to show in between.

The defensive numbers tell the story. Beveren have conceded 20 goals in ten games, an average of two per match. Standard's 16 conceded is nothing special, but at home they have been far tighter, letting in just four goals in five matches.

Team news and likely line-ups

Standard will be without Josue Homawoo, who has an Achilles injury and is not expected back until January, while Mohamed El Hankouri is a doubt with a muscle problem. Up front, Dennis Eckert was the club's leading scorer with four goals after eight rounds.

For Beveren, Leandre Kuavita (muscle) and Kurt Abrahams (minor knock) are both doubtful. Their main attacking threat is Chris Lokesa, who has scored five of the team's 13 league goals.

Head-to-head

History is firmly on Standard's side: 16 wins, four draws and only three Beveren victories according to FotMob, with Standard winning the last three meetings.

That record needs some context, though. Beveren spent five seasons outside the top flight before this year's promotion, so those games are several years old and involved very different squads.

Keys to the match

The first key is Standard's home form. In five games at the Dufrasne they have won twice, drawn twice and lost only once, 1-0 to Charleroi. Against a defence shipping two goals a game, they should create chances.

The second is Beveren's ability to score. With 13 league goals and Lokesa in good form, the newcomers carry a threat, as the 4-4 at Westerlo showed. Standard's back line will need to keep him quiet.

The numbers also point to goals, at least on paper. Standard's league games have produced 31 goals in ten rounds and Beveren's 33, more than three per game in both cases. At home, however, Standard's matches have been far tighter, with only ten goals across five games, which suggests they are better at controlling games in front of their own fans.

There is also a scoring problem for Standard to solve. They have scored only twice in their last three league matches: nothing against Charleroi, then one apiece at Genk and against Kortrijk. Against a defence as porous as Beveren's, that is the area where they most need to improve.

Finally, confidence. Both teams are on poor runs, and the opening goal could weigh heavily in a game neither side can afford to lose.

Our prediction

Standard's winless league run is a concern, but their recent defeats came against top-half sides (Gent, Charleroi, Genk) or away from home. At the Dufrasne, against a promoted team with one point from its last twelve and a habit of conceding, this is a clear chance to get their season back on track. Their dominant record in the fixture points the same way.

Our pick: Standard Liège to win, with a confidence rating of 3 out of 5. For a more cautious option, the Standard-or-draw double chance covers a tighter game, which is plausible after last week's draw with Kortrijk. Please gamble responsibly and only stake what you can afford to lose.
